"We

<
Ogle Workflow : Capture OpenGL 3D content, View it in
Maya, Print it in 3D ! |

|
| Q1 |
Is
it possible to capture any 3D content diplayed by the OpenGL
library with OGLE (The OpenGLExtractor)? |
| A1 |
Hopefully,
but we have not tested them all! Captures from applications
that use vertex
programs for positioning objects may find lots and lots
of objects all on top of each other at the origin of the captured
3D model. Vertex programs are an OpenGL extension which, for
performance optimization reasons, allows for offloading some
custom processing steps to the graphics card using a custom
programming language, which bypasses OGLE. |
| |
|
| Q2 |
When
a content is captured, how can it be saved, and then opened
in a DCC application such as Maya, 3ds max or Softimage? |
| A2 |
Captured
geometries are written in the OBJ file format, which is readable
by most modern DCC applications. |
| |
|
| Q3 |
What
kind of information can be stored by OGLE (geometry, texture,
shaders, animation)? |
| A3 |
Currently
only geometry and vertext normals. We hope to soon add texture
maps and texture coordinates. |
| |
|
| Q4 |
Does
OGLE work with CAD application such as Solidworks that is based
on OpenGL library? |
| A4 |
Maybe,
we have never tested it with SolidWorks because it's so expensive
we dont have a copy! |
| |
|
| Q5 |
Is
OGLE OpenSource? Is it available on Linux? |
| A5 |
OGLE,
as with all projects from the Eyebeam OpenLab, is released under
the free open-source GPL license, though some of the included
libraries may not be. It does not run on Linux because it depends
on the MS Windows "DLL Proxy" technique to gain access
to the OpenGL data stream (see http://ogle.eyebeamresearch.org/architecture
for further explanation). |
| |
|
| Q6 |
Most
3D games use DirectX, do you plan to capture also DirectX instructions? |
| A6 |
No.
This is entirely OpenGL specific, but most games have the option
to run in OpenGL mode. |
| |
|
| Q7 |
Is
OGLE a risk for 3D content creator and copyright in the field
of 3D? |
| A7 |
Possibly.
However, we think of OGLE as a "screen grab" or "view
source" function for 3D applications and the web has allowed
"view source" from the start but that did not stop
on-line content companies from thriving over the last ten years. |
