| Q1 |
What
are the main features of the new PXA270 processor? |
| A1 |
Intel
today announced a new family of processors based on Intel®
XScale® technology that can provide cell phones with full
motion video conferencing capabilities and PDAs with DVD-quality
video playback. The Intel® PXA27x family of processors,
formerly code-named “Bulverde,” added a number
of new technologies to address the power, security, and multimedia
needs of cell phone and PDA users, including Intel Wireless
MMX™ technology, Wireless Intel SpeedStep, Intel Quick
Capture and Intel Wireless Trusted Platform. |
| |
|
| Q2 |
What
are the Operating Systems ready for this new chip? |
| A2 |
Intel
is working with leading O/S vendors to port and optimize their
O/S offerings for Xscale and the PXA270. We provide optimized
Board Support Packages for each of the major OS’s today
for PXA270. As further generations of our products and O/S evolve,
we plan to continue development of those BSPs (Board Support
Packages). |
| |
|
| Q3 |
Will
this new chip accelerate Java applications? |
| A3 |
This
applications processor uses the Xscale technology combined with
optimized Java virtual machines to provide excellent java performance. |
| |
|
| Q4 |
What
are the benefits - for a PDA user - to have such a high resolution
(SXVGA) support? |
| A4 |
The
higher resolution can either be used for increasing the display
quality or providing a larger display device. This allows manufacturers
to create additional SKUs relatively easily off the Xscale platform. |
| |
|
| Q5 |
In
the field of 3D graphics, what would be the main differences
(performances/quality) between a desktop and a PDA? |
| A5 |
The
Intel 2700G multimedia accelerator delivers capabilities mobile
users want:
- High resolution dual display and the ability
to view independent content
- Full screen, full frame rate video playback at VGA and higher
resolutions
- Robust hardware video decode support for MPEG-2, MPEG-4
and Windows Media Video 9 (WVM9)* formats
- Clear, crisp 2D graphics
- High performance 3D engine with over 3 million polygons
per second
- Low-Power Capabilities
The
Intel 2700G is a comprehensive, low-power platform solution
for mobile devices. It offers two configurations of on-die
memory and a low-voltage core, which enables extended multimedia
run-time. Other low-power features are:
- 1.8V
or 2.5V low-power SDRAM
- Power
management: Clock management and advanced I/O technology
- Advanced
LCD support for low-power refresh
- Low
Power Video: Hardware video decode engine.

| |
|
| Q6 |
Will
3D library support the 2700G chip (OpenGL ES / JSR184, DirectXm...)?
Will it support Pixel and Vertex shaders? |
| A6 |
The
2700G will support all of the major 3D libraries. |
| |
|
| Q7 |
The
MPEG4 is a standard for distributing interactive contents. Will
the 2700G chip be able to handle this format (with its 3D profile)
to stream rich media contents over the internet? |
| A7 |
The
2700G provides near-DVD quality playback of movies in a variety
of formats including MPEG4. |
| |
|
| Q8 |
What
kind of applications will benefits of 3D hardware acceleration
on a mobile device? Except the entertainment market, is there
any industrial interest? |
| A8 |
3D
processing capability can be used not only for games but also
improved user experience on a variety of applications. |
| |
|
| Q9 |
With
this new chip series, will the performances differences between
embedded devices systems (PDA/smartphones...) be less important? |
| A9 |
The
embedded product is designed for the unique requirements for
embedded customers, namely a longer life cycle and an optimized
package for low cost board manufacturing. The embedded version
of this product will sample this quarter and be available for
production later next quarter. Additional details will be available
at the product launch planned for the middle of this year. These
will be used for embedded applications, such as GPS Devices,
Telematics, POS, Bar Code Readers, ATMs, Vending Machines, Medical
Devices, etc |

|
| Q10 |
What
are the consequences of those new capabilites concerning power
saving? Do playing a 3D game or displaying a video have an impact
on battery power? |
| A10 |
Comparison
set up :
PXA262 @ 300MHz “Electra” MS Smartphone reference
design using a 900mAH battery
New PXA270 @ 200MHz phone reference design running MS Smartphone
using a 900mAH battery
The power savings you get from doing the applications at equivalent
performance levels and at a lower frequency/voltage result in:
- Listen to an MP3: 42% better
- Video conferencing: 30% better
- Record a family video: 63% better
- Watch a movie: 77% better |

|
| Q11 |
Do
you plan to create a bundle (microprocessor + wifi composants)
for embedded devices (such as the Centrino technology)? |
| A11 |
Intel
continues to look at future mobile platforms and is working
with our customers to determine what features make sense to
integrate either on chip or at platform level. |
| |
|
| Q12 |
What
are the objectives of Intel in the smartphone market? |
| A12 |
As
the smartphone market increases in size and functionality, Intel’s
experience in bring rich application platforms can help accelerate
the development of those devices and the software applications
that run on them. |
