| Q1 |
Please
give a brief presentation of JT Open Program. |
| A1 |
The
Purpose of the JT Open Program is to create an influential community
of software vendors, users and interested parties spanning the
Product Manufacturing supply chain who, through an open distribution
of enabling technology under a level playing field business
model, are able to share 3D visualization data through the medium
of JT-enabled applications.
The Mission of the JT Open Program is to encourage widespread
adoption of JT as the preferred technology for 3D visualization
in the Product Manufacturing industry by providing open access
to a common JT-based visualization pipeline that facilitates
efficiency & productivity across the extended supply chain.
It is the intent of the JT Open Program to establish JT as an
open standard in the marketplace.
The Vision of the JT Open Program is to enable a visually connected
community of users, suppliers and customers spanning the Product
Manufacturing supply chain, enjoying the functional and interoperability
benefits of a single, standardized 3D visualization platform
based on JT technology.
The JT Open program is run by two boards. The Management Review
board is comprised of 15 member company Executive representatives.
This board provides program guidance to UGS. The second board
is the Technical Review Board and this board, comprised of 25
member company technical representatives provides technical
guidance to both either MRB and UGS. |

| Q2 |
What
are the major features of the JT format? |
| A2 |
What
is JT technically?
At its core the JT format is a scenegraph with CAD specific
node and attribute support. Extensibility at multiple levels
is built into the format. Facet information (triangles) are
stored with sophisticated geometry compression techniques. Visual
attributes such as lights, textures, materials and shaders (Cg
and OGLSL) are supported. Product Manufacturing Information,
Precise surface definitions (BREP) and Metadata as well as a
variety of representation configurations and delivery methods
including asynchronous streaming of content are also built-in
features.
Some of the highlights
of the JT format include:
- Product Structure (BOM) with full Instance support with
Absolute Occurrence identification
- Built-in support for assemblies, sub-assemblies and part
constructs
- Flexible single or multiple partitioned structure
- Built-in streaming support
- BREP, including integrated support for industry standard
Parasolid/XT format
- Product Manufacturing Information in support of paperless
manufacturing initiatives
- Precise and imprecise wireframe
- Discrete purpose-built Levels of Detail
- Extensible data paging architecture
- CAE results visualization
- Wire harness information
- Triangle sets, Polygon sets, Point sets, Line sets and Implicit
Primitive sets (cylinder, cone, sphere, etc…)
- Full array of visual attributes: Materials, Textures, Lights,
Shaders
- Hierarchical Bounding Box and Bounding Spheres
- Support for viewing optimizations such as view frustum and
occlusion culling and fixed-framerate display modes
- Layers, Layer Filters
Additional Information
JT Format was designed to be easily integrated into enterprise
translation solutions producing a single set of 3D digital
assets that seamlessly and simultaneously supports a full
range of downstream processes from lightweight web-based viewing
to full vehicle digital mockups.
- Concentrates on being a flexible, complete representation
of a 3D Digital Asset (typically originating from a CAD system
Part file) in virtual product development processes. It does
not (by itself) define the complete viewing environment in
which the asset will be visualized. This intentional separation
of content from presentation is an important enabler for this.
- Because of the emphasis on JT as a basis for creating a
persistent visualization database, the JT file must retain
a high degree of correlation and granularity alignment with
original data (i.e. CAD) and data management systems (i.e.
PDM). This is done to permit automatic, incremental re-translation
of CAD components as they change to keep the visualization
database up-to-date. This characteristic has been put to the
test in many production environments.
- JT file format is closely aligned with run-time representation
for fast and efficient loading/unloading, but does not define
interaction behavior within the file format, either in the
form of specific viewer controls, viewport information, animation
behavior or other event-based interactivity. This makes the
files more easily reusable in configuration management systems
and dissimilar application interoperation.
- The multiple LOD strategy of JT uses discrete individual
geometry nodes in the scenegraph. One of the benefits of this
mechanism is that it permits Level of Detail representations
to be created with processes other than decimation (i.e. progressive
meshes). For example, feature removal, visibility shells,
alternative tessellation parameters, hand-tuning are all methods
that can be used to create purpose-specific LODs.
- JT is an established format with a proven track record in
the area of Visualization Database (virtual mockup) representation.
It is also an established format that enables large scale
digital mockup and high-performance visualization.
- While the JT file format itself is extensible, in practice
the content is carefully evolved to guarantee the highest
degree of compatibility between JT data sources (i.e. translators)
and JT data consumers (e.g. viewers). This guarded evolution
rather than open-source style evolution reduces the format
mutation problems that have plagued other open standards such
as VRML and STEP.
- JT format is supported by a company whose full time business
is supplying visualization technology, it is in production
use on thousands of engineering programs, across hundreds
of thousands of seats against terabytes of production data.
- Adoption and Coverage: JT Data can be created from every
major 3D product design application (i.e. CAD system) available.
Significant investment has been put into this broad coverage
over the years. While other 3D initiatives may pursue formal
standardization processes, the true measure of a standard
is the degree to which it is adopted within the industry it
serves.
- Industry focused: The JT format has significant presence
in Automotive, Aerospace and Heavy Equipment industries.

|
| Q4 |
Is
it possible to publish on the internet a CAD data with
JT Open technology? |
| A4 |
When
you say JT Open Technology if you mean the use of JT Translators
to produce lightweight JT files that can be shared on the Internet
using technology such as Teamcenter Community the answer is
yes. The JT Open Toolkit will give any member the ability to
read JT data and incorporate support for viewing in their rendering
product. |
| |
|
| Q5 |
Is
it possible to encapsulate JT Open contents in a PDF document
? |
| A5 |
The
PDF format as of Acrobat 7.0 supports the ability to act as
a “container” so JT files can be “attached”.
These files can be encrypted within the PDF file.
You can also password protect the attachment individually.
You can even create links to the attachment from within
the PDF so that a user can launch a JT viewer by clicking
on a graphic. In the future, Adobe will support the import
of JT files into PDF for 3D viewing by Adobe Reader.

|
| |
|
| Q6 |
What
are the benefits of using JT Open technology in a PLM strategy? |
| A6 |
The
JT file supports visualization, collaboration, and validation
for geometry related processes throughout the product lifecycle.
JT files can be automatically created when a CAD file
is checked into PDM and is automatically synchronized with
the CAD master. Because it is both lightweight and precise,
it can be used by any user (including suppliers using different
CAD tools) from non-technical to analytical as illustrated
in the pipeline graphic. This depth and breadth of use
cases from a common JT file ensures that everyone will be
working from the most current data without relying on an expensive
and complex CAD tool.

|
| |
|
| Q7 |
Is
JT Open format secure and lightweight? |
| A7 |
The
JT Open Technical review Board is currently looking into Digital
rights Management in an effort to define security and ensure
JT is on the leading edge of this technology. The JT file format
does not include DRM at this time however. JT files are able
to provide lightweight representations through either “lossy
or lossless” compression algorithms based on user preference. |
| |
|
| Q8 |
Is
it possible to interact with the JT Open published model
(to measure, to play assembly animations, simulations...)? |
| A8 |
JT
files are able to support measurement directly and simulation/animation
through the .vfm format utilized in Teamcenter Visualization
products. The JT Open Toolkit supports read and write of .vfm
motion files. |
